Specific learning disorders are neurodevelopmental disorders that are typically diagnosed in early school-aged children, although may not be recognized until adulthood. They are characterized by a persistent impairment in at least one of three major areas: reading, written expression, and/or math.

Intellectual disability is identified by problems in both intellectual and adaptive functioning. Intellectual functioning is measured with individually administered and psychometrically valid, comprehensive, culturally appropriate, psychometrically sound tests of intelligence.While a specific full-scale IQ test score is no longer required for diagnosis, standardised testing is used in the process. A full-scale IQ score of 70 to 75 indicates significant intellectual functioning limitations.
